How Meditation & Reiki Can Support Your Money Mindset
Our nervous system is truly incredible. It acts as the body’s communication hub, constantly sending signals that help regulate everything happening inside and around us. At the heart of this system are two key players: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Think of the sympathetic nervous system as your body’s built-in alarm. When it senses danger—whether it’s a charging tiger or a credit card bill you forgot was due—it kicks into fight-or-flight mode. Your heart rate spikes. Your breath shortens. Your muscles tense. Your body gets ready to protect you, fast.
On the flip side, there’s the parasympathetic nervous system, often called “rest and digest.” It helps you come back down. Heart rate slows. Muscles relax. You feel safe again. And that’s when your body can actually heal, make decisions, and operate with clarity.
Here’s the kicker: Your nervous system doesn’t know the difference between actual danger and modern-day stressors like debt, a huge vet bill, or “I can’t believe I spent that much on Uber Eats again.”
It reacts the same way 😳
Which is why nervous system support is one of the most underrated tools for changing your relationship with money.
- You can’t be proactive about budgeting when you’re in fight-or-flight.
- You can’t build wealth from a place of panic.
- You can’t make strategic financial decisions when you feels unsafe.
You can’t stop your nervous system from responding, but you can help your body to come back to neutral. That’s where meditation and Reiki come in.
🌬️ Meditation: Take Time to Slow Down
Meditation is a practice of paying attention to your body, your brain, your thoughts without judgment. It teaches you to witness your thoughts without immediately reacting to them, which is exactly the skill you need when money anxiety kicks in.
“But AJ, I can’t meditate.”
I’ve heard it all, and let me tell you: you don’t have to sit upright, cross-legged in a sun-drenched room for 30 minutes a day. You can meditate while walking. In the shower. Before bed. While holding your baby or washing the dishes. It can be 1 minute or 30 minutes. You get to choose what works for YOU.
If you’re new to it, start simple:
- Download Insight Timer (a free meditation app!) and try a beginner series.
- Or just set a 60-second timer, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and notice the physical sensations in your body.
- Inhale through your nose for 4 counts. Hold for 4. Exhale through your mouth for 6. Do this 4-6 times.
You’re not doing it “wrong” if your mind wanders. That’s supposed to happen. You’re doing it right by showing up and noticing what happens in the stillness. Training this observation skill can help you start to notice and observe what happens when you experience financial triggers IRL.
✋ Reiki: Energy Healing for Your Nervous System
Reiki is an energy healing modality that originated in Japan. The word itself means “universal life energy,” and the whole idea is that we all carry energy that can be redirected, unblocked, and restored.
During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels energy through their hands, through light touch or hovering above the body. Reiki can also be performed via distance, with the practitioner and client in different physical spaces. This energy channeling helps shift your energetic state. It’s kind of like clearing static off a radio signal, or using a pipe cleaner to clean a straw. You might feel warmth, tingling, emotional release, or just deep relaxation. But the real magic of reiki is how it gently coaxes your body into that parasympathetic state in a safe way.
It’s not a replacement for financial strategy, of course. But easing our body into relaxation and truly surrendering to the movement of energy through our system helps prep us for when stress and financial anxiety show up. It allows us to witness those moments with more ease, grace, and compassion, and react differently than we may have in the past.
If you’re curious, we recommend booking a session with Carlie Aliotta, a trusted practitioner in this space. She’s been my best friend since we were 3 and the absolute best at this work. She’s warm, intuitive, and highly skilled at creating a safe space for energy healing and transformation.
There’s a reason our 1:1 programming takes your nervous system into account. Financial wellness isn’t just about numbers on a spreadsheet, it’s also about how safe you feel in your body when you look at those numbers.
Meditation and Reiki help build resilience in your nervous system, so you can respond to triggers with more ease. From that place, you’ll make better decisions, feel less overwhelmed, and show up for your financial goals with confidence.
